The Mainstage Series
Directed by Alan Stanford
The Charity Randall Theatre inside the Stephen Foster Memorial, 4301 Forbes Avenue, Oakland
Following a seance with a quirky clairvoyant, Charles Condomine’s late wife, Elvira, is back – much to the dismay of his current wife! Blithe Spirit playfully mocks the traditions of love and marriage while thumbing its nose at the Grim Reaper. Witty repartee and physical comedy – fun for the whole family!
"Director Alan Stanford brings this glorious farce to life (pun always intended). It’s rife with droll humor, slapstick and supernatural fun. It is one enchanted evening, or to paraphrase Shelley, “Hail to thee, Blithe Spirit!”"
"It's fun and funny, with highly enjoyable performances. As Arcati, Mary Rawson's a delightful mix of hocus-pocus kookiness and tweedy, prototypical British matron. Daina Michelle Griffith gives Ruth a Maggie Smith spin and is wonderfully funny. Charles is rather one-note — he mostly whines about how put-upon he is — but Dan Rodden finds enough variation to not just hold our interest but make us care about his fate. And Vera Varlamov, as Elvira, can slink across a stage like nobody's business."
