The story of a journey made by Little Nell, a fourteen-year-old girl and her grandfather, the proprietor of the eponymous shop. We follow them and their journey through England as they run from the evil moneylender, Quilp, who seeks the money he lent to the grandfather as investment, but whose addiction to gambling has brought about his ruin. Quilp wants revenge and he wants Little Nell. The journey takes them through various trials for her and temptations for the grandfather, and on the journey, they meet with a mixture of kindness and ill fortune and some of the most wonderful characters drawn from the imagination of Charles Dickens.

INTERVIEW: Jacob Epstein & Caroline Lucas, PICT Classic Theatre's THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP

"THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP is filled with plot and character. There’s a lot going on. While it’s a lengthy show, it’s never tedious. It’s chock full of Dickensian wit and charm."

"THE ACTORS, many of them regulars with the company and well known on the Pittsburgh scene, give spot-on portrayals of the colorful characters."

"PICT’s THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP, a classic Dicken’s story brilliantly adapted to the stage with memorable characters played a talented ensemble of experienced actors in rich costumes under superb direction at a great performance venue makes for an unforgettable theatrical experience. Make time to see this Haunting Tale of Little Nell."

"JOAN MARKERT'S COSTUMES are flawless. She captures 1850’s London raggedy and sooty style with an artistic flair."

"I ONLY MENTION THIS because the storyline, unfamiliar to me at the time, was so compelling and full of Dickensian spirit, despite Stanford's obviously successful and praiseworthy tinkering (although tinkering is too trivial and lackluster a word to use in regard to Mr. Stanford's abilities)."

"STANFORD HAS ASSEMBLED an incredibly talented cast of actors; veterans and those early in their careers to fill the lead roles and the ensemble."
