The Mainstage Series
Sherlock Holmes & The Crucifer of Blood
Pittsburgh Premiere | Directed by Matt Torney
The Charity Randall Theatre inside the Stephen Foster Memorial, 4301 Forbes Avenue, Oakland
Holmes & Watson are back! David Whalen and Martin Giles reprise their roles from 2011’s hit The Mask of Moriarty as the master detective and his stalwart sidekick. So far, Holmes has two murders and the threat of more deaths to come if he can’t solve a mystery around a blood oath and a treasure chest filled with jewels. This exotic thriller takes us from India to Baker Street to spooky Pondicherry Lodge in Maidenhead to a Limehouse opium den to a boat chase on the Thames, and finally back to Baker Street for a surprise denouement. Fun for groups and the whole family!
"It’s a trip back to the dark ages of our modern era—and back in time theater-wise... Whether you are a hardcore Sherlock fan or not, you might consider seeing it for three reasons: 1. The acting rocks. 2. The stage effects, within that fog, are eerily effective. 3. If you have an interest in the new wave of Sherlock adaptations, The Crucifer of Blood will give you a different take on the Holmes genres."
"With a cast of nine playing multiple roles, [director Matt Torney] juggles the action of this unwieldy script smoothly and with dashes of physical humor that add up to two acts of good-natured entertainment... This period piece is vividly heightened by a flexible set design by Johnmichael Bohach, the eerie lighting of Cindy Limauro and effective sound from Joe Pino that all adds up to a handsome production."
