The Mainstage Series
Woman and Scarecrow
July 10 - August 4
Directed by Alan Stanford
The Henry Heymann Theatre inside the Stephen Foster Memorial, 4301 Forbes Avenue, Oakland
Woman is dying. With quintessentially Irish wit, she and her mysterious companion Scarecrow consider what she leaves behind and what might have been as she faces the mystery of what is it to come. Is that Death lurking in the wardrobe?
"The production's strength is in its lead characters... Nike Doukas plays Woman with a ferocity of spirit and energy that belies her terminal condition... Karen Baum's Scarecrow takes the role of devil's advocate, pointing out some of the ways taken or not taken and the deliberate delusions that led to the place where Woman finds herself... "
"Nike Doukas is near-operatic as Woman; tremendous highs and bone-shaking lows informed by a passionate ferocity mow down everything in front of her... Karen Baum plays Scarecrow with a mixture of petulance, sorrow and not a little rage — providing great counterpoint to Doukas' aria. James FitzGerald and Sharon Brady, as husband and aunt, also make the most out of their comic, but poignant, roles."
