New Three-Part Online Lecture Series on Oscar Wilde
May 8, 15, & 22, 2020
PICT continues its interactive lecture series on Fridays at 2pm with three new installments on the life and work of Oscar Wilde.
Join us for A Walk on the Wilde Side: Oscar’s Love, Lust, Charms, and Trials beginning this Friday, May 8th. This detailed and engaging series will be led by PICT Artistic and Executive Director, Alan Stanford, a noted Wilde historian.
This lecture series is FREE, and appropriate for ages 14+. The current lecture schedule is as follows:
MAY 8: The Charm Offensive
In his 4 major plays, Wilde examines and satirizes the two great social malignancies of the late Victorian period – Class and Corruption. In the apparent world of social and moral integrity that the Victorians proclaimed, prostitution, homosexuality, illegitimacy, bribery, rampant prejudice, and corruption were rife. And Wilde lampooned all these themes in his plays and stories to the amusement of his audience who were generally the very people he was lampooning.
MAY 15: Of Love and Life and Lust
In his writings, Wilde examines so many themes on the topic of love. His soul was that of a romantic and his capacity for loving was immense; His problem was that “he could resist everything except temptation.” In this session we will examine Wilde the lover: his marriage, his sons, his discovery of his true nature and the young men who filled is life with joy and pain and eventually led to his destruction.
MAY 22: A Time of Trial and ‘One of Us Has to Go’
The fateful decision to prosecute the Marquis of Queensbury brought Wilde eventually to prison, exile and death. In this final session we will look at the choices he made and the words he wrote – some prophetic and some confessional. We will see some of his finest and most moving of all his writing in the letter to Bosie, “De Profundis.”And we will travel with him to the room with the bad wallpaper in which he died.
Each lecture is 90 minutes long, and hosted from 2:00pm-3:30pm EST on PICT’s Webinar Ninja page.
