Friendship is unquestionably the closest form of human contact other than marriage. And Shakespeare’s plays are filled with rich examples of friendship. From Hamlet and Horatio to Rosalind and Celia, friendship in all its richness of trust and affection abounds. But in the world in which Shakespeare lived, friendship was also a dangerous relationship. The politics of the time ade friendship a risk to life and limb.
