Throughout his writing career, Shakespeare managed to mangle the actual history of most of the kings he wrote about. But by doing so he painted a picture of power and its misuse better than any other writer since the Greeks.

Over the next two weeks, we will examine the first of his History play cycle, RICHARD II: a play that will plant the seeds of, and culminate in, the Wars of the Roses.
