Tartuffe: The Art of Hypocrisy
Moliere has often been described as the French Shakespeare; his comedies not only have stood the test of time as much as those of the Bard of Avon, but were also just as much a satire on the morays of the time. In a mixed world of vast wealth and grinding poverty, Moliere exposed the corrupt and absurd world of the privileged during the reign of Louis XIV, The Sun King. Over the next two weeks we will examine his most popular of plays, Tartuffe: not only a great classic of comedy, but also a brilliant treatise on the topic of hypocrisy.
