There is one story, written by Aesculus, which has had a hold on modern theatremakers over the past two millennia. The trilogy known as the Oresteia concerns the return of Agamemnon from the Trojan War, his murder by his son, and the son’s suffering from the avenging Furies. The cycle describes the effects rather than the conduct of war and speaks of war and conquest in terms we can recognize all too easily today. Shakespeare himself understood the power of Aesculus’ message. “As flies to wonton boys are we to the Gods. They kill us for their sport.” This week we will consider Aesculus’ brilliant assessment of the product of war and its aftermath.
